Designated Reader

Ian: "Lilly, let's make a surprise for daddy when he comes home from work--because daddy loves to read to us."

They worked so hard. My favorite part? Daddy's picture in the middle--Ian's idea.

Thank you, God, for a daddy who reads to and loves on his children. MY children.

What is your favorite children's book? Who did you most love to read you stories when you were a child?

  1. that is adorable! yeah, my middle boy is a creative spirit(all three are, but he's the most likely to have something (or three) on the go at a single time. (like me) but then has this introverted sensitive interior (all d's) underneath the socially necessary extrovert he is constructing as he grows. is it creepy that i analyze them so much? probably. but i don't care ;) don't you love it when you see parts of you and their dad coming together to make such cool beings? :) (i know this is long -- considered sending an email instead ;)

  4. Ahh... has to be The Little Match Girl. I would read it to myself. A bit disturbing perhaps because when you look it up on Wikipedia..."story about a dying child's hallucinations.."
    Hmm....

  5. Sara--one of our favorites to read out loud! VERY out loud. You should hear Ian 'reading' it to Lilly in his Grover voice...

  7. So sweet! I'm not kidding when I could have been a Children's Lit. Major. My "babies" are six now...and my oldest 12. We have a library filled with my favorite books..mainly from when I taught. We love Eric Carle, Patricia Polocco, Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein (one of my favorites as a kid was Where the Sidewallk Ends). My little girls love Olivia, Pinkalicious, and anything by Lauren Child. When I taught a few of my treasures were anything by Graeme Base (AMAZING illustrations), the Weighty Word Book (sooo clever, great for upper elementary), Hatchet, The Giver, and my ALL-TIME favorite is The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. This is a great suspenseful read aloud for upper elementary by Avi.
Hmmm...now I have another thing to post about- books! Our playroom border used to be the book jackets from favorite books. So fun...I miss it!
Thanks for popping into my world...I love yours too!

  8. How sweet!
I don't think I have a fave, but my most vivid memory of reading childhood books is my mom, my sister, and I going through our selection of Fraggle Rocks book and reading one every night. And then, of course, I loved when my Teddy Ruxpin would 'read' to me!

  9. My favorite book growing up was The Little Engine That Could. Every time I would get frustrated with something, my parents would remind me of The Little Engine as a way to motivate me to keep trying.

  10. Love this post! Some of the best things I've saved from my kiddos childhood are their books. Their children LOVE to read and be read to from their mommy and daddy's books. Some favorites are Goodnight Moon, In Case You Ever Wonder, Runaway Bunny, Guess How Much I Love You, many Dr. Suess books because of the rhythm and rhyme...later we loved chapter books. We love reading!
